Big five, photography, expert guides

Game drives are open-vehicle outings at first light and late afternoon, when lion, leopard, elephant and wild dog are most active. The vehicle is private to your group, with a local guide, through Moremi, Chobe, Savuti and the edges of the Delta.

Most days start before sunrise. Morning drives run three to four hours, then back to camp for breakfast and the heat of the day. A second drive goes out as the temperature drops and cats start to move. The guide reads tracks, light and wind rather than ticking a list.

Dawn and dusk are the useful hours: cooler air, active predators, and better light for elephant herds along the Chobe and for general game in Moremi. You travel in a private 4×4 with open sides and a raised seat, and the vehicle stops when something is worth watching. Routes cover Moremi floodplains, the Chobe riverfront, Savuti plains, and dry-season tracks on the Delta fringe.

A drive can include elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and impala in season; lion, leopard and spotted hyena where the habitat holds them; wild dog when a pack is denning or hunting nearby; and floodplain birds such as saddle-billed stork, fish eagle and bee-eaters. Sightings are never guaranteed.
